KOBAspl-2 and KOBAspl-3 by Kobayashi

KOBAspl-2 and KOBAspl-3 are two 1/5 scale electric rc motorcycle prototypes made by Mr. Kobayashi. KOBAspl-2 was designed back in 2007 and was the first prototype model.

Later in 2009 an updated model was presented, the KOBAspl-3.

A lot of hard work has been put in these rc bikes and we would like to thank Mr Kobayashi for sharing his awesome bikes with us.

Edi's profile

The rc hobby is more than just driving. Is about being creative as well as competitive. Edi is the perfect example that managed to build his own bike and take this into a whole new level. We want to thank Edi for sharing all this info with us, so here is what he has to say:

First 5 rc Bikes Prototype in foreground

I started driving 1:8th IC cars after about 16 years of not moving anything radio controlled model beginning of 2008. At that time I was always watching the Thunder Tiger Team Austria on our track with their RC-Bikes. I said to myself: "I will never ever start that up!!" It just didnt look like fun. They had highly tuned Thunder Tiger FM-1E and it didnt really look good at all. They had a lot of technical problems but with talent they managed to move them somehow.

Early 2009 I talked to one of the guys (Aaron) and told him that I actually could design a bike and what it would have to look like. He told me how the main layout should look like and I did the rest. The first design should have been for the WC in Leipzig as a "Plan B" in case the Thunder Tiger SB5 wasnt finished till then. But then the SB5 arrived and I shelved the first design of the JABBER in the rubbish bin.

Aaron let me try a bike then. It was a KP09 and after 3 charges I managed a few laps and it really was fun. From then on I just had to build my bike. I was looking for a cheap way to have the parts made but it would have cost a fortune. Suddenly I had the idea to make it with a lot of components made of SLS. I redesigned the first Bike within a week and ordered all parts. 14 days later I drove my first JABBER. It worked right "off the CAD Screen"

Jabber 2011.1 "Lostallo":

First Prototype of the 2011 Second Prototype of the 2011

This is the 7th Generation Prototype since early 2009. This bike is a complete redesign for the 2011 Season with all the best ideas developed over the last 2 in the previous 6 Generations.

Overall weight:

R4V (Ready 4 Victory) is between 1700-1725g. There is a possibility to balast the bike with up to 300g where ever required.

Wheelbase:

295-308mm adjustable in 3-5mm Steps. Adjustable either only front or rear or both in relationship to the CG. This way the CG can be easily adjusted.

Steering Angle:

4 Steps, 19-21-22-23°. The Fork rotates around the front axle. This way you ONLY change the steering angle without changing the Wheelbase.

Steering Spring assembly:

This is from the Anderson Motorace. It is fine tuned for minimum friction and play. There are also different springs in it. The advantage of a through shaft shock is that it acts exactly the same in both directions.

Steering Servo Position:

It is mounted in a upright position. This way it is easy to align all linkages perpendicular and straight. Again this allows the steering to move in the same way left AND right.

Steering Axle Assembly: 5x13x4 mm Bearings and a hardned Axle to ensure minimum friction ,Zero Play and maximum crash resistance.
The bearings have proven to last for a whole season.

Rear Swingarm: The rear Swingarm is limited in the top and bottom by the chassis. This way all forces encountered in a crash are kept away from the rear shock.

Rear Shock: This is the RCC-X from Serpent. It is a standard 1:10 Scale Shock fine tuned for the needs in a Bike. It has proven to be more than enough for a 1:5th scale Bike.
It is easy to maintain and keeps oil tight for a whole season.

Fork:

Partick Allevens Motoproto CrMo Fork. It has modified dropouts and shafts for the SB5 Style Front brake.

Front Brake:

SB5 Style Front Brake with the Servo mounted on the Fork Dropouts. Floating Brake disc and a high quality servo improve the front brake. The Brake Cam is supported opposite to the brake pad to eliminate bending forces on the Servo. This way the servos keep longer and also produce more braking force.

Rims:

From the SB5 for obvious reasons I will NOT explain here.

Driver Figure:

SB5 ugly but easy to handle and robust. Withstands even the hardest crashes and clumsiest Mashalls.

Belt Drive:

6mm wide belt with Aluminium Pulleys. Properly maintained a belt lasts for about 100 charges. The Pulleys last for a whole season.

Hubs and Spokes:

7075 Aluminium Hubs and 4mm Carbon Spokes to fit the SB5 Rims. Close to indestuctable. Improved mounting of the front brake disc. A wheelset can be changed within 5min. if you take your time.

Spur gears:

48DP. Also this has proven to be good enough for a 1.5th scale bike. As a neat little feature I also made a Spur Gear protector. I change my spurs for saftey, never ruined one on the curbs.

damn I could continue on and on and on......
leaning angle, motor position, crashbar position, Shock mounting position, Lipo, Zero Ziptie, minimum cable legth, Chassis stiffness,... .....etc etc...
